News Release: Three Oak Harbor Elementary Schools Recognized for Advancing Student Achievement, Growth, and Closing Opportunity Gaps
Oak Harbor Public Schools is proud to announce that Hillcrest, Crescent Harbor, and Olympic View Elementary Schools have been recognized by the Washington State Board of Education and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction for their success in advancing student growth, academic achievement, and closing opportunity gaps during the 2024–2025 school year.
“Seeing our elementary schools recognized at the state level is a powerful reflection of the intentional work happening in our classrooms every day,” said Superintendent Dr. Michelle Kuss-Cybula. “Our staff are deeply committed to ensuring every student grows, achieves, and feels supported. This recognition affirms that commitment and the meaningful impact it is having on our students.”
Hillcrest Elementary School received recognition through the Washington School Recognition Program for students making some of the largest gains in the state across multiple measures in both English Language Arts (ELA) and math. The school also ranked in the top 10% statewide for ELA, math, and attendance among low-income students.
“Our staff and students put in meaningful effort each day, and this award reflects that commitment,” said Paula Seaman, principal of Hillcrest Elementary School. “It’s the result of a school community where every individual contributes to a supportive, nurturing environment. Just as importantly, we take pride in creating a place where learning is joyful and fun.”
Olympic View Elementary School earned recognition for Hispanic/Latino student growth, ranking in the top 10% of schools statewide in ELA, math, and attendance. The school was also recognized for strong outcomes among multiracial students, including high marks in math proficiency, growth, and attendance.
“This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff,” said Sara Lucero, principal of Olympic View Elementary School. “They are willing to think outside the box, try new approaches, and creatively meet the diverse needs of our students. Our students continue to impress us with their resilience, grit, and determination to learn and grow.”
Crescent Harbor Elementary School was recognized for Hispanic/Latino student growth in the top 10% of schools statewide in ELA, math, and attendance. The school also demonstrated significant growth among students with disabilities in both math and ELA. “This accomplishment reflects the incredible effort of our teachers and staff, who have worked hard to ensure every student has the support needed to meet grade-level standards,” said Bill Weinsheimer, principal of Crescent Harbor Elementary School.
Oak Harbor Public Schools congratulates the students, staff, and families whose dedication made this achievement possible. To learn more about the Washington School Recognition Program, visit the Washington State Board of Education website.
