Supporting Our Military Families

Roughly 40% of our students at Oak Harbor Public Schools are military connected and we are a proud Purple Star Award district.

Staff, students, and volunteers are preparing for Month of the Military Child. You can join the celebration on Purple Up Day, April 15, an annual tradition in recognition of military children.

When there is global conflict families may experience extended deployments and grief and concern about loved ones involved. As a #OneOakHarbor community, we are here to help.

In Monday's school board meeting, Dr. Kuss-Cybula shared, "We're very grateful for the partnership that we have with NAS Whidbey and are really appreciative to our military families. If you know of a family that needs extra supports, especially with extended deployments and new deployments, please reach out to your school."

Visit our Military Families Resource page for more information.

Oak Harbor's NJROTC Recognized as a Top Program in the Nation

Oak Harbor's NJROTC program were one of 23 programs selected out of 636 in the nation to compete at the US Navy JROTC National Championship at NAS Pensacola in Florida last weekend.

The 2 day competition included an academic test, athletic events, Unit Personal Inspection, and drill events in an elite competition atmosphere. Out of the 636 programs in the nation, Oak Harbor finished 19th, including placing 11th in the armed exhibition and 14th in the unarmed exhibition.

NJROTC is a citizenship and leadership program designed to encourage and help students to become informed and involved citizens of the United States. Oak Harbor high school started its Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program in 1973. Today, more than 200 students participate in the program each year.

Also recognized were teacher team Mr. O'Toole and Ms. Tennies who "exemplify the power of strong leadership and partnership by bridging academic work with focus on schoolwide spirit and staff community. They contribute significantly to the inclusive environment we are building at OHI."

Pat Tang and Mia Gehrmann Honored with Citizen Certificates of Accommodation

Oak Harbor Chief of Police Tony Slowik presented Broad View Elementary counselor Pat Tang and teacher Mia Gehrmann with Citizen Certificates of Accommodation for their "quick thinking and profound compassion in response to a domestic violence crisis involving a district family."

Broad View Elementary "is the place that the family felt safe to go to," said Slowik to the packed room at Monday's school board meeting.

"Ms. Gehrmann and Ms. Tang collaborated and secured a safe environment for the impacted family and children during an intense seven hour plus investigation. Throughout this critical period, Ms. Gehrmann and Ms. Tang demonstrated unwavering emotional support and dedication by ensuring the school stayed open and the impacted family had a safe place to stay. These actions allowed the police department to focus its limited resources entirely on the criminal investigation and also to make sure the community and neighborhood was safe. Ms. Gerhmann and Ms. Tang's proactive intervention and selfless service exemplified the spirit of community, cooperation, and the #OneOakHarbor vision."

Actions like these remind us that relationships are the heart of teaching and learning and when we build community partnerships, we are stronger together.
