Name of New School Building Announced for Hand-in-Hand/HomeConnection/OHVA Schools
After months of gathering input from students, staff, and families, the Oak Harbor School District Board of Directors voted unanimously to name the new Hand-in-Hand/HomeConnection/Oak Harbor Virtual Academy building Forest Vista Learning Center.
"Forest Vista Learning Center reflects the heart of who we are and where we are," said Board President Lynn Goebel. "The board deeply appreciates the thoughtfulness and care the community brought to this process."

While the individual program names will remain the same, the new facility that will house all three programs will officially be known as Forest Vista Learning Center when construction is completed. Located off Regatta, the building is being fully funded by State and Federal grants, meaning no local debt for the community.

"We are thrilled with the name Forest Vista Learning Center because it captures both the natural beauty that surrounds us and the spirit of discovery we hope to inspire in every student," said Principal Shane Evans.

“The naming process truly embodied community collaboration and stands as a symbol of the power of student voice and collaboration as #OneOakHarbor” said Superintendent Dr. Michelle Kuss-Cybula.

A diverse committee of students, parents, and staff reviewed over 150 submissions to select three finalists, ensuring each aligned with board policy and reflected the district’s history and geography. Those recommendations were presented to the school board for consideration at the April 28, 2025, Board of Directors meeting.

“It is not very often that a community can come together and name a brand new building. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed ideas and feedback throughout this process." said Superintendent Dr. Michelle Kuss-Cybula.

The name Forest Vista Learning Center will officially take effect when the new school opens in the Fall of 2026. To stay up to date on construction progress, go to the OHPS website

Oak Harbor Public Schools and the City of Oak Harbor Parks and Recreation Join Forces to Celebrate Arbor Day with Tree Plantings at Elementary Schools

In celebration of Arbor Day on April 25,  Oak Harbor Public Schools and the City of Oak Harbor Parks and Recreation worked together to plant trees at every elementary school across the district.

The event is part of a five-year, $1.5 million grant supporting environmental education and outdoor activities in the community. This community-wide initiative demonstrated the shared commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability and hands-on learning opportunities for students.

“Providing students with real-world experiences, like planting trees, not only supports our science curriculum but also instills a lifelong sense of responsibility for the world around them,” said Superintendent Dr. Michelle Kuss-Cybula. “We are proud to partner with the City to create greener, more engaging school campuses for our students.”

City and school staff, students and community volunteers joined forces to plant 21 trees on the school campuses, an effort that will forever enrich the schools and the community. The day also featured activities like storytelling sessions, chalk art stations and a live demonstration by a professional tree climber.

“It’s great to see the community come together for Arbor Day. I would like to thank the City’s Parks and Recreation staff, the entire Oak Harbor Public Schools family, and everyone who pitched in to make this happen. The trees planted today will be here for years, growing alongside our kids, and that’s something to be proud of,” said Mayor Ronnie Wright.

As the newly planted trees take root, they stand as living symbols of community partnership, sustainability, and the importance of nurturing the native environments in Oak Harbor.

Madisyn Spanos (‘25) competed in Broadcasting and shared the emotional moments of the competition, "the most stressful part of competing was while filming our broadcast from scratch, especially since we had a lot of technical difficulties, but the moment we finished it and realized we were done everyone in my group started crying because we were so relieved and happy we had finished it.”

Reflecting on the event, Katherine Sheppard (‘26) highlighted the significance of the awards ceremony, stating, “I was not expecting to hear my name when they announced first place, but they did, and now I can’t wait to compete at Nationals.”
