Gwen Miller Selected as New Student Board Representative
The Oak Harbor School Board of Directors appointed Oak Harbor High School sophomore Gwen Miller as its newest student representative at their Monday, May 12, School Board Meeting. Miller will fill the junior student representative position next school year, following the graduation of current high school senior and senior student board representative Maggie Litvachuk.

The purpose of the student board representatives is to help ground district and school board decision-making in student voice by participating in critical conversations and sharing student perspective on issues.

"I was originally drawn to the position because I felt I could provide a voice to our schools and I would love to speak up for the smaller voices, " said Miller during her interview.  She also shared that one of her goals as a student board representative would be to address mental health support and resources for students.

Miller is actively involved in both her school and the broader community. She is an Eagle Scout, competes in track and cross country, and is a member of the SkillsUSA Engineering and Technical Drafting Team. Through her diverse participation in activities, she believes she can connect with and represent a wide range of student perspectives.

Miller was selected from a competitive pool of six finalists, including HomeConnection students Sophia Burdick and Lindann Chastain, and Oak Harbor High School students Grace Zhao, Calleigh Boyer, and Kailynn LaRue. The board expressed deep pride in the strength of all the applicants and shared their appreciation for each student’s thoughtful participation in the process. Additional opportunities for involvement will be available to these candidates in the future.
