The school board governance role centers on improving student learning outcomes. The Washington School Board Standards provide a common framework for school board governance for local school boards and directors in which our school board sets its annual goals.

Standard 4a:  Committing to continuous improvement in students achievement at each school and throughout the district.

The board will hold the school district accountable for meeting learning expectations by:

  • The board will continue to monitor student mastery of learning standards aligned to the Strategic Plan goal areas and provide opportunities for two-way communication with all stakeholders. This will include Superintendent Advisory Council meetings with community and board participation, School Improvement Plan (SIP) progress monitoring reports, opportunities for celebrations, and regular progress monitoring updates.
  • The board will strengthen two-way communication with stakeholders throughout the year and maintain transparency by sharing regular updates on district progress. Each year, the board will review the district’s strategic and school improvement plans, celebrate the efforts of staff and schools, and ensure student learning goals remain at the center of the work.

Standard 4c: Measuring student academic progress and needs based on valid and reliable assessments.

The board will hold the school district accountable for meeting students learning expectations by:

  • The board will ensure the use of valid and reliable assessments to monitor student learning, identify gaps, and guide effective instructional practices across the district. Disaggregated achievement data will be reviewed throughout the  year, with progress updates highlighting the impact of interventions and sharing student stories of growth and success. An annual gap analysis will also be conducted to track trends in disparities and ensure resources are aligned to closing opportunity and achievement gaps for all student groups.

Standard 3e:  Adopting and monitoring an annual budget that allocates resources based on the district’s vision, goals, and priorities for students learning.

The board will create conditions district-wide for student and staff success by:

  • The board will adopt, monitor, and communicate a fiscally responsible budget that aligns with the district’s vision, goals, and priorities for student learning, safety, and wellness. To ensure long-term stability, the board will pursue state and federal grants, impact aid, and other revenue opportunities while advocating for sustainable funding policy.
  • Transparency and community engagement are central to this work. The board will provide clear public reporting on budget priorities, seek community input, and ensure final budget documents are accessible with understandable explanations of funding allocations and impacts. The board will also oversee responsible management of capital projects and maintain a reasonable ending fund balance to safeguard fiscal integrity.
