Welcome to Second Grade! My name is Julie Landau and I have been teaching in Oak Harbor since 1989, kindergarten through third grade. There is something special about each grade level, but I really love teaching second graders. They come in excited and ready to learn. Here is a brief overview of what your child will be learning.
Our district has adopted Storytown which is a reading and language arts curriculum that emphasizes phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and writing. Students will have a lot of reading choices as they work to build reading and writing stamina.
In math, we will start by exploring addition and subtraction strategies. Then we will move on to story problems, adding and subtracting with regrouping, and measurement and geometry. By the end of the year, students will be introduced to multiplication and fractions.
Building Blocks of Science is our newly adopted science curriculum. This year we will be learning about Matter and Earth Materials. I love science and am super excited about all of the new resources available. We even have an engineering component!
Thank you for the opportunity to know and teach your child. I am looking forward to a year filled with fun, learning, and new experiences.
