Dear Students and Families,
I am thrilled to be teaching Second grade at Hillcrest Elementary. This is my fifth year at this school. Previously I have taught fourth grade here, Library at Grant Street Elementary in Port Townsend, and a multi-aged 1st and 2nd grade at a small private school. Hillcrest is my home, and I am so happy to be here! I am also happy to announce that this year our class will be hosting a student teacher, Ms. Force. Ms. Force is very qualified and will be a great asset to our learning community.
What We Will Learn:
In second grade, we will be learning about the many aspects of community. We will talk about how communities are similar or different, and how the environment and nature are important to people in all communities. We will also be learning what we can do to be good stewards of our environment, and great citizens in our community. We will connect our learning to Science through a new program called The Building Blocks of Science, and we will participate in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities. In Science, we will study ecosystem diversity, earth materials, and matter. We will participate in fun, project-based learning involving rocks, and pollinators, and we will extend our scientific explorations with field studies on the environment. Here is a complete outline of our Elementary Curriculum, the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and Technology Standards.
We are moving towards Standards Based Report Cards, and you will find student's work graded O, S, P, N. These are related to standards as follows:
- O: Outstanding, above standard
- S: Satisfactory, meets standard
- P: Progressing towards standard, not quite at standard
- N: Needs improvement, does not meet standard
We have three reporting periods a year and report cards are released digitally through Skyward Family Access. If you will need a print copy of report cards, please see the front office to make a request.
Students will be expected to read one hour a week and work on iReady lessons 45 minutes a week. We will log our reading using a program called Bookopolis where students can earn digital badges, get book ideas, and share reviews of what they read. If you have difficulty with internet access at home, students can turn in a paper log on what they have read, just let me know. Our goals for homework will be set each week, month and we will celebrate each other's successes. Homework is not graded, but students will earn points for completing work and meeting goals.
Communication is very important in our classroom, there are many ways for you to be connected. We are always looking for volunteers for special celebrations, field trips, and every day tasks like small group, copies and prep, math and reading with kids. I will send out a Google Form for you to complete soon which will let me know the best way for me to reach you, and if you have interest in sharing your time with the class in some way. If you need any assistance with this, please let me know. Your feedback is always appreciated.
I use a program called Class Dojo to keep you informed up to the minute with your child's behavior and progress in class. It is secure, and can be used on any computer with internet access or any smartphone by downloading the free app. You will receive a secure invitation to our class, and your child will be able to build their own digital portfolio to share things they are proud of between you, myself, and them. You will also see our Class Story, where there will be fun photos and news from the day. The only people who have access to our posts are people in our class with the secure code.
The best way to contact me is by email or Class Dojo, I will respond as soon as I am able. If you call the classroom, I will answer whenever I am not teaching, and will try and get back to any messages within 24 hours. If you have an emergency or transportation change, please contact the office. (360) 279-5200.
Our class also uses Google Classroom as another resource to keep informed at home and at school as to what your child is working on. I will upload lessons, tutorials, and help videos relevant to what we are working on in class. We will spend time in September learning how to log on to our Google Classroom, as well as working on Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety. If you are tech savvy, this is another great volunteer opportunity, as it can be difficult for our Second Graders to get started with this.
I am so excited for all of the fun and learning we will have this year in Room 22! Thank you so much for your part in making this the best place to be!
