Ms. Rachel Howard

  • My name is Rachel Howard and I am the new Life Skills Teacher at Olympic View Elementary school. Here is a little about me to help you and your child get to know me. I moved here about two years ago with my husband and my mixed hound dog. I was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. So far we have enjoyed our time here on Whidbey Island. We love being close to the ocean and having so many fun places to hike.

Teaching is important to me because it is one of the few professions where you can say that you have made a difference in the world. Making a difference in the world is my life-long dream, I decided I would become a teacher so that I could make a difference in at least one student’s life. When teaching you impact students in many aspects, you can help them to find their calling or just plant the seed of a life-long love for learning. In my teaching philosophy, I plan to achieve both, I want to help students realize their unique way of learning, as well as discover a life-long love for learning.

I fell in love with Special Education when I was in High school. I spent more than 50 hours volunteering in a life skills classroom in my Senior year of high school. From there I went to college and earned my degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. At the same time, I worked at a Private Preschool as a toddler teacher. There I learned hands-on how to differentiate every lesson for all ability levels of my students aged 12 months to 24 months.

I love teaching and learning. I hope that my love of education will impact each of my students in a positive way. I am excited to see your child’s growth throughout the school year. I value parents that are involved in their student’s education. Therefore, communication with parents will be primarily positive and informative. I will utilize technology to email parents about their students’ successes as well as needs. I will use technology to communicate what students are learning as well as how they are progressing. I will encourage all parents to call or email me to ask any questions as well as to set up appointments with me to talk face-to-face in order to promote active listening to parents as well as open-mindedness to their child’s education
