I
do not assign regular homework for music, but we do have occasional written
assignments or tests during class time. First through fifth grade students will have
at least one evening performance during the school year. My expectations
are that all students attend their performances. I hope to not only see
your student participating in that performance, but to see you there watching
their talent on stage. If you are going out of town or if your child is
sick, please send a note to explain the absence.
Grades
Students
are given two grades in music. One is for skills (understands and applies
music knowledge and skills) and one is for effort (demonstrates cooperative
behavior, is self-directed, takes responsibility and show appropriate
effort). In each of these categories, students can earn the following:
O=Outstanding
(above grade level)
S=Satisfactory
(at grade level)
P=Progressing
towards grade level
N=Needs
to improve
The
skills grade is determined through a variety of assessments that come in
the form of tests, quizzes, performances/demonstrations of skills and in-class
assignments. Students are assessed based on the Washington State
Standards for music. The skills grade may fluctuate each trimester for a
student because different skills sets are being evaluated. The primary
function of assessment in the music classroom is to provide accurate,
constructive, and supportive feedback to students about the quality of their
growing musicianship and listenership.
Students
earn an S for effort when they come to class prepared to learn and create
music, try his/her best, solve problems and help classmates. I am looking
to see that students are actively participating and not sitting out. This
grade should be maintained each trimester.
Report Cards-Family Access
Elementary/secondary school report cards are available at the end of each grading period and
students are assessed in accordance with Oak Harbor Public Schools board
policy. Parents can keep tabs on their children's progress and their
problems by checking online in Family Access, a secure system that also allows
you to check attendance and more. Account information is provided to each
