By working together, we can create a successful learning environment for students at school and at home. Here are some highlights of what's happening in our classroom.
Homework Students will have one or two short homework assignments each night as well as occasional long-term projects. The nightly homework is intended to reinforce concepts introduced in class. By glancing over homework the next day, I can quickly tell how much additional instruction is needed. If your child struggles with an assignment or needs an unusual amount of parent help, feel free to write a quick note at the bottom of the paper.
Homework assignments are recorded in student agendas together as a class. A class copy of the agenda is always at the front of the room so absent students can copy down assignments upon their return. Papers are usually passed out as we write assignments into the agenda, and copies are put in absentee folders on the desk of absent students at that time. Missing assignments are noted on a weekly progress report and should be completed as soon as possible.
Grades Most classroom activities are practice work or formative. In my classroom, formative activities are scored - either by myself or by the students - in order to provide feedback, but scores are not entered in the grade book. After students have had several opportunities to practice, a few work samples are collected and examined to determine if the student is proficient in the goal areas. Students are frequently involved in developing proficiency criteria and hopefully have a good understanding of quality work by the time samples are collected. On our report card, proficiency is indicated with an "S." Students still progressing toward proficiency are given a "P," and those working above grade level proficiency are given an "O."
Report Cards-Family Access
Elementary school report cards are available at the end of each grading period and students are assessed in accordance with Oak Harbor Public Schools board policy. Parents can keep tabs on their children's progress and their problems by checking online in Family Access, a secure system that also allows you to check attendance and more.
