Dear Students and Families,

 

Welcome to a new school year at OHI! This is my 13th year of teaching, and my 2nd year teaching 5th grade in Oak Harbor. Learning is a journey, and it's one I look forward to sharing with you. In fact, I know that your child will be more successful this year if we work together to tap their potential.


5th grade is an important year for building on the fundamentals of elementary. In ELA we will develop more complex writing skills as we create narrative, informational, and opinion pieces and projects. We'll be reading across genres (fiction, non-fiction of all kinds, and poetry) and fine-tuning our reading and critical thinking skills. In Social Studies we'll be studying American History through the American Revolution. This includes the framework of our government, early migration to the Americas, European Explorers, early settlements in the U.S., slavery, the colonial era, and the fight for independence. Simulations and daily activities will make history feel relevant and engaging as we learn.
