Dear Students and Families,

I am thrilled to be able to work with all of you for the 2017-2018 school year! We are embarking on a new adventure together as Oak Harbor Intermediate school opens its doors. My son and I just moved here from sunny Southwest Florida where I taught for three years and we are absolutely loving the island! This is my first year teaching fifth grade, but I have spent the past three years teaching eighth grade English Language Arts. I currently hold a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Reading Intervention and Instruction; I am currently working towards my Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership with an Emphasis in K-12 Education. It is my hope that I can bring these experiences into the classroom to help your child grow as a learner.

This year, we will be focusing on Social Studies, Reading, and Writing in our Literacy block. For Social Studies we will be looking at topics that include: Geography, Native American History, Early English Settlements, Slavery, The American Revolution, The Constitution, and The Bill of Rights. In our Reading and Writing endeavors we will be digging deeper into fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. We will also be developing our writing skills to include narratives, biographies, opinion-based, and explanatory. Throughout all of these topics we will be folding in regular grammar, vocabulary, and spelling practice too.

Fifth grade is an exciting year for students and their families alike. It is my hopes that we will build a welcoming learning environment where educational risk-taking is encouraged and learning never ends. We will have a packed-full year of learning and I look forward to seeing your child grow academically and socially as well!

Sincerely,

Ms. Ashley Thigpen
