What is oral reading fluency?
Oral reading fluency is the ability to read, speak, or write easily, smoothly, and expressively. A fluent reader is one who reads and understands what he or she is reading quickly and with minimal effort. Fluency skills should increase as learners progress from beginning to advanced readers and writers. Fluency enables learners to read and write with more understanding. At the primary level, we often monitor fluency using the DIBELS assessment. DIBELS assesses how many words a student can read per minute.
The documents below are grade level DIBELS passages. Included is a teacher word per minute sheet and a blank passage for the student to read. I believe there are 10-15 passages per grade level. Please refer to the above HomeConnection guidelines to determine if you child is reading at, below or above grade level.
