My name is James Schlegel, and I am entering my 20th year as a public school educator and my seventh year as the music specialist at Hillcrest Elementary. Connecting with the students and families here at HCE has been a great honor and privilege.
One of the great joys of teaching music has been the production and presentation of musical programs that feature our amazing student body's group and individual performing talents. Since Covid safety rules have been lifted, we will return to our normal schedule of rehearsing and performing musical programs this year!

In the classroom, students will play many instruments, participate in movement activities, and play musical games. They will learn about reading and writing music notation and will compose their own music. Students will also learn about composers and music history. They will also have the opportunity to listen, evaluate, perform, create, and respond to world music in a variety of fun and exciting ways this year.
I look forward to meeting our new students and fostering continued rapport with those returning to HCE.
So, here we go! Let's explore the musical world around us and develop greater cultural understanding through attentive listening (identifying the elements of music), enactive performance (dance, play-along), and creating our own music (improvising and composing)!
