Erickson Named Assistant Transportation Director
Oak Harbor Public Schools is pleased to announce a familiar face, Helen Erickson, as the new Assistant Transportation Director. Helen will report directly to Transportation Director Catherine Gutierrez.
“Cathi is such an amazing person, and I am honored to be working right alongside her,” Erickson said. “It’s going to be a very different feeling sitting in the bus yard behind a desk now after heading out that bus gate for over 18 years. I am so excited to be stepping into this position and entering the other side of transportation. I love this group of people I work with, and I am ecstatic to be a part of it and continue to make us stronger and better.”
A native of California, Erickson has served in OHPS transportation since 2005. During her 17 years of experience as a driver, Erickson has built strong relationships with students, families, and staff. A quick study, Helen also spent three years working at North Whidbey Middle School as a Lunch Detention Supervisor.
“Helen has been an incredible partner on our transportation team, and we are beyond thrilled to see her grow in this new position,” Gutierrez said. “Her experience as a driver will bring that voice and perspective to our administration that’s needed.”
In addition to her skills and knowledge of school transportation, Erickson has shown a willingness to learn and adapt to various situations. A former police officer, Erickson has firsthand experience dealing with various situations that have prepared her for a role as an administrator.
Erickson will begin her new role on Wednesday, April 13.
