What is the School Board?The School Board is the governing body that oversees the overall direction of the district. Board members are locally-elected officials that establish board policies (the rules and regulations of the district), select and evaluate the Superintendent, employ personnel based on his recommendations, and adopt and revise the annual operating budget. Board members represent the public’s interest in education. Oak Harbor Public Schools have five directors, each elected for four-year terms. They are responsible to the voters and act under the direction and restriction of state laws. As volunteers, board members serve without pay. They make sure the public is aware of the needs and progress of the educational system and has opportunities to provide input and feedback.

The School Board holds regular business meetings the second and last Mondays of each month, except during July and December when the Board holds one regular business meeting a month. The business meeting, which begins at 6 p.m., usually takes place in the board room of the Administrative Services Building at 350 S. Oak Harbor Street.
The agenda for each board meeting is available on the district website through “BoardDocs” and at the meeting itself. The agendas for regular business meetings are typically posted to the website the Friday evening before the meeting. All regular board business meetings are public, and everyone is encouraged to attend. Executive sessions are closed to the public. Meeting minutes are posted after approval by the school board.
The Role of the Superintendent
The Superintendent is hired by, and is directly responsible to, the Board of Directors. The Superintendent serves as secretary to the board and is responsible for providing effective leadership and securing the best educational opportunities for children. They are responsible for fulfilling the mission of the schools to improve student learning. They provide leadership to obtain and develop quality staff, to encourage and maintain communication between them, and to manage funds and facilities.
