  • By working together, we can create a successful learning environment for students at school and at home. Here are some highlights of what's happening in our classroom.

    You can expect your child to have homework Monday through Thursday. Every week students will take home a green homework sheet.  This sheet outlines your child’s homework for the week.  Homework will be handed out on the day that it is assigned.  Homework is to be completed at home and  returned to school the next day.  I record an effort grade which reflects your child’s willingness to turn homework in completed and on time.   On the back of the green homework sheet is an overview of that week’s reading lesson.  It will contain spelling words, a grammar focus, words from our story, and robust vocabulary words.  

    Reading is very important and students will be expected to read 20 minutes every night and record it on their reading calendar.  Nightly reading helps to build their fluency, comprehension, and love for reading.  In addition, students will get a daily math and spelling assignment to reinforce the concepts taught in class.  Students are also strongly encouraged to practice their addition and subtraction facts.
    Please take the time to correct your child's work and do not worry if you find something you don't understand.  Just do the best you can. Students should try to answer every problem on their homework page.  Students are encouraged to have a consistent time and place for homework at home.  This helps them to concentrate and complete their homework to the best of their ability.
    Daily Work:
    Students will be evaluated regularly to monitor their progress.  Since many assignments are completed together in class, not every assignment will be graded.  Grading will be based on a combination of daily work, informal assessments, tests, and class participation.

    Grades/Progress Reports:
    At the end of each trimester, Progress Reports will be sent home with your child.  Students will be assessed in the following way:
    • O (Consistent and Outstanding): Student demonstrates superior performance and skills beyond grade level  expectations.
    • S (Satisfactory):  Student demonstrates a solid performance appropriate to content and grade level.    Satisfactory is strong grade.  It shows that a student is performing at and meeting the expected grade level requirements.
    • P (Progressing): Student demonstrates partial accomplishment of knowledge and skills or requires   support to demonstrate understanding of skills.  Student is progressing toward grade level requirements.
    • N (Needs Improvement):  Student is not making satisfactory progress toward grade level requirements.

    Report Cards-Family Access
    Elementary school report cards are available at the end of each grading period and students are assessed in accordance with Oak Harbor Public Schools board policy.
