Family Update | 12.8.20

  • Our official review day for our reopening plan is Tuesday, Dec. 8. However, the recent increase in cases over the last four weeks makes it certain that our COVID-19 rate will be well-over our 60 per 100k mark, which is why we’re reaching out to you now.  Our School Board is reviewing our current plan, but will not change the week of Dec. 14-18. That means we will move to Distance Plus that week.  We have additional information to share about the upcoming weeks, so please carefully review the following information.

    SPECIAL BOARD MEETING|
The School Board hosted a special three-hour virtual workshop on Saturday, Dec. 5 to meet with representatives from parents, staff, teachers, and administrators, listen to their feedback, review our current plan, and explore options. The Board is planning another special meeting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, to continue discussions about possibly modifying the plan before Jan. 11. This meeting will be live-streamed, and public comment will be available (by sign-up).

    DEC 14-18  |  DISTANCE PLUS
Starting Monday, Dec. 14, all elementary schools, and Oak Harbor Intermediate will transition from our Hybrid Instructional model to Distance Plus learning. Some students will continue receiving on-site services at our elementary and intermediate schools.  Small group instruction will continue at HomeConnection, North Whidbey Middle School, and Oak Harbor High School.  Schools will communicate information directly with families about those on-site services.

    DEC 16  |  UNPLUG DAY
Our School Board declared Wednesday, Dec. 16 as Unplug Day! We encourage students to go outside, spend time with family, play board games, or do anything away from the computer or screens!  For our students who receive in-person instruction on Wednesdays, we will continue our individual and small group services as usual on this day. Free meals will also be available for pick-up as usual.

    JAN 4 - 8  |  DISTANCE LEARNING ONLY
The first week after Winter Break is a Distance Learning Only week. This means there will be no on-site services for any students. During this week, we will retest our entire staff for COVID-19 and urge any families who have traveled or hosted visitors during the holidays to quarantine.

JAN 11 and BEYOND  |  TO BE DETERMINED
The School Board is meeting this week and still gathering input on what the plan should be beginning Jan. 11. If changes are made to our reopening plan during the Special Board Meeting on Wednesday, we will communicate those updates to families on Thursday, Dec. 10.

    CONTINUING FOOD SERVICE

Our FREE food service will continue through Distance Plus and distance learning.  Beginning on Monday, Dec. 14, our Food Service team will partner with our transportation department to increase meal drop-off locations around Oak Harbor.  To see our full list of locations and times, please view our website.

Our school buildings will also remain open for an extra 30 minutes to allow families to come by and pick up their free meals.  As a reminder, you can visit any of our school locations and collect food, not just the one your child attends.

    Adjusted Meal Pick-up Times:  10:30 a.m - 12:30 p.m. at each school site

    WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER

We know the news of our move to distance learning K-6 may be difficult for your family. Our staff and teachers are committed to making this as smooth a transition as possible. Many teachers will send materials home for Group A students on Tuesday, Dec. 8.  Group B students will receive their materials on Friday, Dec. 11.
