We are excited to share that your child will participate in a new literacy curriculum pilot during the 2020-2021 school year. All elementary sites are piloting the Amplify CKLA curriculum in kindergarten through fourth grade. Amplify CKLA is a robust, rigorous, and engaging resource that receives the highest ratings from independent educational research.
What is Amplify CKLA?
Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) is a language arts program that combines an explicit, multisensory approach to phonics with rich texts carefully sequenced to build content knowledge—so that learning to read and reading to learn to develop together. Every day in Grades K–2, students complete one full lesson that builds foundational reading skills, as well as one full lesson that builds background knowledge. In Grades 3–4, students start to master the basic reading skills, further opening up their worlds.
Amplify CKLA provides access to student readers. These readers are uniquely designed to provide intensive practice while reading simple but compelling and authentic stories. In Grades K-2, these readers are decodable chapter books that allow students to practice just-learned sound-spellings within an authentic reading experience that incorporates compelling plots and interesting characters. In Grades 3-4, readers develop close reading and other literacy skills by selecting diverse, content-rich literary and informational texts.
Beyond the readers, all elementary students will have access to Amplify Reading, an online, adaptive reading program designed to enhance independent student practice.
Why pilot a new curriculum?
In light of our nation’s current COVID-19 health situation, and the need for both distance learning and hybrid education models, the instructional materials selected for students becomes even more vital. Ensuring our students read complex, high-quality texts that build content knowledge and vocabulary ensures they receive high-level and rich instruction in literacy. Amplify CKLA provides our students with many online resources to use both in-class and through our distance learning model alongside high-quality print resources. Amplify CKLA uses a science of reading approach and supports fulfilling our commitment to upcoming dyslexia legislation.
Pilot Process and Partnership
During this year, our students, teachers, and families' input will be collected to ensure that Amplify CKLA is a good fit for OHPS and aligns with our goal of each and every student growing as a confident and skilled reader and writer. Oak Harbor Public Schools values a strong partnership with our families, including open, two-way communication, transparency, and honoring multiple perspectives. Please be on the lookout for future communication about how you can share your feedback about Amplify CKLA as a part of the curriculum pilot process.
