This program is part of your benefits package, but the services are completely independent of the school district and are free to all employees. You and your household dependents can access it 24-7 in complete confidence. The district does not access any information about who uses it or their reason for access.
Should you, a fellow employee, or a family member have personal life challenges such as grieving, parenting, special needs, or mental/physical health issues, contact First Choice Health.

Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML)
PFML is a new benefit for employees in Washington to access when a serious health condition prevents them from working or when they need time to care for a family member or a new child. The program is administered by the state’s Employment Security Department and eligible employees may apply for benefits starting January 1, 2020.
Eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of paid leave a year, but may qualify for additional time. Eligibility is determined based on an employee meeting each of these conditions:
- You’ve worked 820 hours (about 16 hours a week) in Washington during the qualifying period, which is about the last year.
- You’ve experienced a qualifying event. Qualifying events include a serious health condition that prevents you from working, a new baby or child joining your family, and a family member’s serious illness or medical event.
- You are not a federal employee, employed by an employer who has an approved exemption (we do not), or covered by a collective bargaining agreement that hasn’t been opened or renegotiated since before October 19, 2017.
Employees apply for benefits through the Employment Security Department's website. Applications are processed and approved directly through the Employment Security Department. You will need to provide them with paperwork that proves you experienced an event that qualifies you to take paid leave. You must notify your employer of the need for time off 30 days prior to a qualifying event, or as soon as is practical. The Employment Security Department is responsible for determining whether or not your benefit is approved and the monetary amount. Employees will file weekly claims with the Employment Security Department to get paid.
