Teacher of the Year

  • VFW Washington State Teacher of the Year

Chief Thiel with State Award Congratulations to Chief Thiel!  He received the VFW high school level Teacher of the Year award for Washington State.  Chief has been the Naval Science Instructor in Oak Harbor since 2005. The NJROTC program has received the highest award any unit can receive since he started working at Oak Harbor High School.

One recommender said, “I can’t think of a more deserving teacher than Chief Thiel for this award.  He is the very definition of the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher. Chief Thiel is not only a remarkable asset to his students, but to the Oak Harbor community as a whole.”

The VFW Teacher of the Year award takes recommendations to the local VFW post, then goes to the district level, and then to the State of Washington.  Chief Thiel received a plaque and $1,000 for professional development expenses, and now his name and recommendations are forwarded to the National level for judging. If he is selected, he will receive a trip to the National Conference to receive the award.

    Congratulations, Chief!
