The Oak Harbor School Board announced the appointment of Oak Harbor High School junior Shaquan Gallagher to fill student representative Tiara Hylton’s seat Monday, Jan. 13.
Shaquan was one of five finalists selected to interview for the position in front of the School Board. During the interviews, Shaquan stated that he wanted to serve on the Board to connect with the community and his peers but also recognized how it would be beneficial on his resume. Also, he identified social issues facing Oak Harbor High School students and improvements for the school.
“When I found out I was selected, I was shocked,” Shaquan said. “It’s an incredible opportunity, and I just want to spend some time to get my footing and understand this huge role I’m taking.”
Shaquan is a high achieving student, enrolling in AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP US History, AP Language and Composition and Honors Algebra 2. He has a passion for learning in general as he’s also taken business management, leadership, video production, and automotive. He’s described as outspoken, articulate, and driven. He’s also very active, participating in track, key club, and robotics.
The student school board position does not have any voting privileges, but Shaquan will be included in many topics and discussions providing insight from the student perspective.
Oak Harbor Public Schools would also like to recognize the remaining finalists who were outstanding during the interview process: Johanna Asencio-Morcillo, Jake Mitten, Evelyn Osburn, and Octavia Prosser.
Shaquan will be sworn in at the Monday, Jan. 27 Board Meeting.
