Learning Resources

  • By working together, we can create a successful learning environment for students at school and at home. Here are some highlights of what's happening in our classroom.

    Homework
I believe that homework at this age is not developmentally appropriate. Therefore I will not be assigning any formal homework. Rather I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with success. Eat dinner as a family, play outside, and get to bed early.

    Grades
It is the responsibility of each student to work towards improvement of his or her grade. Students will receive one of the following scores in each area: satisfactory (S);  Progressing (P); or needs improvement (N) in skill areas of each subject.  In Kindergarten, we do not offer O’s as a grading option because we are all progressing in a variety of basic skills.

Grades in our classroom are calculated by classroom participation, and several assessments given throughout the trimester e.g. math tests, one on one reading fluency checks, and writing samples.

Participation and completion of work is what we focus on for the first quarter. As we settle into the year, assignments will become more complex, but participation and striving to complete work are two big things we try to push in Kindergarten.  We have a lot of foundational skills to cover, so I make note of which students are focused and trying their best each day.

    Report Cards-Family Access
Elementary school report cards are available at the end of each grading period and students are assessed in accordance with Oak Harbor Public Schools board policy. Account information is provided to each family by the school office at the start of the school year. Talk to your school office about Family Access or learn more here.

I will include comments with all my report cards so please let me know if you have any questions.
