Students will sometimes be asked to "take notes" from the textbook as a homework assignment. This usually means getting the definitions for the highlighted terms and the major concepts (usually in boxes in the textbook) into their mathematics notebook. As mathematics courses get more advanced, we strive to be more formal with mathematics vocabulary and symbolism. If students already have the vocabulary and major concepts written down, we can focus on effectively applying how to use the words and ideas during class time, rather than waiting as students copy information from the whiteboard or projector screen, usually at different writing rates. Adding color (colored pencils, markers, highlighters) may also accent student focus and learning, even though assignments themselves should be completed in pencil.
