HEALTH

Length: one semester/one-half credit


The health education class is a required semester class for graduation that will be taken during the 9th grade year. The course will provide a relevant course of study in sexuality and relationship issues, nutrition and weight management, CPR and safety, emotional health and coping skills (teen suicide, domestic violence, etc.) and drug education. The class will focus on these areas using problem solving and communication skills that help teens learn to deal with these issues now and in the future.


FIT FOR LIFE

Prerequisite: None; Graduation Requirement
Length: one semester/one-half credit


This course will combine conditioning and fitness with a wide variety of activities and sports. Students will have the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge to be used in their recreation or leisure time. Team, dual, and individual sports will be emphasized, while developing sound physical, mental, and emotional fitness habits. Each student will be required to create a personal fitness plan. Note: This course is a prerequisite for all other physical education offerings.


BASKETBALL/FITNESS

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fit for Life
Length: one semester/ one-half credit


Conditioning and fitness will be combined with the skills of basketball. Individual and team basketball skills will be developed, and will be demonstrated in drills, games, and tournaments. Proper shooting techniques as well as the fundamentals of team playing and ball handling skills in a competitive atmosphere will be emphasized.


BACKPACKING AND SURVIVAL

Syllabus: Backpacking and Survival
Grade: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fit for Life; Must have Junior or Senior status
Length: one semester/one-half credit


This course will be offered 2nd semester only. This course will take an in-depth look into outdoor recreation with the main focus on backpacking and survival. Topics will include warm and cold weather survival, recreational safety, first aid, backpacking techniques and equipment, navigational techniques, trail and backcountry etiquette, and ecological awareness. A two night backpacking trip will be an optional part of the curriculum. A fee will be charged for this optional activity. Student supplied equipment: backpack, sleeping bag, food, rain gear, and shelter Student expense: lab fee and transportation costs.


LIFE SPORTS

Length: one semester/one-half credit

The purpose of this course will be to develop skills and knowledge of games, and rules for sport activities that the student may encounter through life. Following enrollment, student may select from various offered sport activities. Activities which may be included are archery, volleyball, golf, tennis, badminton, bowling, tennis, and handball.

Conditioning and fitness will be combined with the skills of soccer. Soccer skills will be developed, and will heavily emphasize conditioning and endurance. Skill emphasis will be on proper shooting techniques as well as the fundamentals of team playing and ball handling skills in a competitive atmosphere.


RACKET SPORTS/FITNESS

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fit for Life
Length: one semester/one-half credit


This course consists of three units: badminton, pickle ball, and tennis. A heavy emphasis will be placed on skill development and strategy of each of these activities through instruction and tournament play. Fitness and conditioning activities will also be addressed.


TEAM COMPETITIVE SPORTS

This course includes the following activities: volleyball, racquet sports, tennis, basketball, flag football, and softball. Skills and team strategy will be emphasized through instruction and tournament play.

Conditioning and fitness will be combined with the skills of volleyball. Individual and team volleyball skills will be developed, and will be demonstrated through drills and tournaments. Emphasis will be on fundamentals and proper techniques, as well as team playing, in a competitive atmosphere.


WALKING/FITNESS

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fit for Life
Length: one semester/one-half credit


This course uses walking to improve fitness. It will include flexibility, muscular strength, and cardiovascular exercises. Indoor and outdoor walking will be emphasized. A fitness plan will be created, and students will record progress as related to goal setting.


WEIGHT TRAINING/CONDITIONING

Syllabus: Weights and Conditioning

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Fit for Life
Length: one semester/one-half credit


This is a conditioning course that will include a variety of activities. Weight training will involve work in the weight room and conditioning will involve fast foot drills, jump rope fitness, testing power walking, and other aspects of conditioning.
