Vocabulary and speaking fundamentals will be addressed and practiced. Students will explore career opportunities and learn research skills, and will work with research resources.

The focus of the instruction in this class is preparatory for the WASL.

This yearlong class, which meets the requirements of 10th grade English, will focus on basic reading strategies and practices to increase reading proficiency. Writing, spelling, and vocabulary are also addressed. Students must meet established criteria for enrollment in this class.


INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH

This is a full-year class required for students who need to improve their writing and reading skills to the level of WASL proficiency. This is a full-year required course for students who have shown proficiency on the reading and writing portions of the WASL or successful completion of the Intermediate English course. This is the "core-course" of American Literature and will include readings in American Literature, culture, and history. The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of American culture.

Students will study and write various analytical essays on literary and non-literary topics. The students will become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and be able to compose skillfully in narrative, expository, and argumentative forms. Students will also be required to write one research paper per semester in preparation for the synthesis essay on the AP exam.

Or... Everything you always wanted to know about writing a college research paper but were afraid to ask. This course prepares students for that Anthropology 101 course where, on the third day of class next September, your instructor says, "You have a twelve-page paper on any topic in Anthropology due on November 5th. I expect no grammatical, syntactical, or mechanical errors. Class dismissed." Holy Cow, Batman! No errors? Syntactical errors? Help! Not to worry. This is the course where you will learn to write a fully documented research paper. You will encounter up-to-date technological information resources; traditional library information resources; an effective research process; and you will learn the skills necessary for writing a tightly controlled, unified research paper- skills which include avoiding those nasty syntactical errors. The course is challenging and immensely satisfying. During the weekend before that Anthropology 101 paper is due, you'll be playing video games and eating bon-bons while your fellow freshmen are still drafting their papers and perspiring profusely, wondering how to explain to Dad&


ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANUAGE (ESL)

This course is designed to build language proficiency and focuses on developing speaking and listening skills by enhancing self-confidence and promoting appreciation for all cultures. This course is offered after school for all eligible students (7th period). Students are grouped in regular classes for support as they earn credit toward high school graduation. Students are monitored daily and may receive assistance during their regular class periods. Note: Must provide your own transportation home from school.

Do you want to paint pictures with words, create tension in tawny tetrameter, or wind a character into such a whirlpool of trouble that he can't seem to find any way out except, " & and then he woke up," but you don't know how to get him out? Then the rules of writing are open to you, though Somerset Maugham said, "There are three rules for writing fiction. Unfortunately no one knows what they are." Like any great writer, he understood the irony of creating new ideas, and he understood that the doors to creative work are open to anyone who knocks. Creative Writing will show you what writers do and leave you with a collection of short stories that will rest on the shelves of the Oak Harbor High School library, listed in the catalogue, waiting for someone to read.

Students will study science fiction as an important genre in the history of literature. Through thematic studies of important novels and short works, students will examine Sci-fi from its origin to its present-day forms and explore the effects of technology on the modern world.

DRAMA I

Students in this course will develop a basic knowledge of theatre through the creation of an ensemble to focus on improvisation, theatre games, and performance. Development of creative thinking and confident communications will be cultivated through scene work and basic acting skills. They will survey the history and development of dramatic forms and be introduced to the art of stagecraft. Note: Qualifies for English or Fine Arts credit


DRAMA II

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Drama I.
Length: one semester/one-half credit


Students will continue their work to develop ensemble and theatre skills by creating production teams, resulting in the presentation of One Act Plays. Teams will be concerned with acting, design, direction, theatre tech, costuming and publicity. The class will look at acting styles and methods as well as various genres of dramatic literature. This course would be appropriate for seniors who are developing their culminating project. Drama II may be repeated for credit. Note: Qualifies for English or Fine Arts credit
