Traits and Indicators for Rating Written Composition

Grades 4-12

Ideas

1. Writer communicates a clear central idea and maintains focus.

5 points if:
___States or implies a clear central idea.
___Provides a clear focus and narrows the topic effectively.
___Maintains consistent focus on the topic.

3 points if:
___Provides a recognizable central idea.
___Attempts to go from general observation to specific detail.
___Maintains focus on the topic most of the time.

1 point if:
___Contains no central idea or has more than one undeveloped central idea.
___Chooses topic too broad or too narrow to develop.

Content

2. Writer provides relevant information with enough details to support the central idea.

5 points if:
___Provides relevant supporting details that give the reader enough information.
___Defines terms the audience will need to know.
___Provides examples to support and develop the central idea of the whole paper.

3 points if:
___Supplies some detail, but doesn't go far enough to support the main point.
___Usually chooses details that develop the central idea of the whole paper.
___Generally supplies information relevant to the whole paper.

1 point if:
___Lacks enough detail
___Uses inaccurate information and/or misleading information.
___Chooses details and/or examples that are not relevant to the whole paper.
___Chooses details that are too specific or too general.

Organization

3. Writer organizes material to develop topic and enhance the central idea.

5 points if:
___Arranges material in an order clear to the reader and suitable to the topic.
___Sequences material in a logical and effective manner.
___Divides topic effectively into paragraphs.
___Provides transitions which clearly connect ideas.
___Provides an effective introduction and conclusion.

3 points if:
___Provides a recognizable organization.
___Attempts an understandable sequence.
___Usually divides the topic effectively into paragraphs.
___Provides some transitions in an attempt to connectideas.
___Provides a recognizable beginning and/or ending.

1 point if:
___ Provides no recognizable organization.
___ Uses confusing sequences.
___ Uses irregular or too frequent paragraphing or omits paragraphing.
___ Uses confusing transitions between ideas or omits transitions.
___ Provides no sense of beginning and ending.

Voice

4. The writer speaks directly to the reader in a way that is individually expressive, engaging, and appropriate. The reader feels a strong interaction with the writer, sensing the writer behind the words.

5 points if:
___ Communicates strong personal style.
___ Shows strong commitment to the topic.
___ Uses effective tone.

3 points if:
___ Reveals some personal style but is not compelling.
___ Shows some commitment to topic.
___ Sometimes uses inappropriate or ineffective tone.

1 point if:
___ Reveals indifferent, uninvolved style.
___ Remains distant from the topic ("you").
___ Uses inappropriate or ineffective tone.

Word Choice

5. Writer conveys the intended message using precise, engaging words appropriate to the audience and the purpose.

5 points if:
___Effectively chooses words appropriate to audience and purpose.
___Chooses a variety of specific and accurate words.
___ Incorporates lively verbs, precise nouns, and descriptive modifiers.

3 points if:
___ Generally chooses language appropriate to the audience and the purpose.
___ Chooses words that are correct and adequate but lack flair.
___ Attempts to use a variety of words and descriptive language.
___ May use clichés or slang.

1 point if:
___ Chooses inappropriate or vague language.
___ Demonstrates an inadequate vocabulary.
___ Repeats, omits, or uses words incorrectly.
___ Overuses jargon or clichés.

Sentence Fluency

6. Writer constructs sentences that are complete, clear, and varied.

5 points if:
___Writes complete sentences.
___ Uses sentences of varied length and structure.
___ Structures sentences clearly.
___ Writes sentences that flow smoothly.

3 points if:
___ Sometimes writes run-on sentences or sentence fragments without interfering with meaning.
___ Uses some variation in sentence length and structure.
___ Usually structures sentences clearly.

1 point if:
___ Writes run-on sentences and sentence fragments in ways that obscure meaning.
___ Shows limited variety in sentence length and structure.
___ Uses sentence structure that obscures meaning.
___ Overuses connectives (and, and so, but then, and then, because, etc.)

7b. Capitalization

Writer applies basic rules for capitalization

5 points if:
___ Appropriately observes capitalization rules.

3 points if:

7c. Punctuation

Writer applies basic rules for punctuation.

5 points if:
___Uses commas and end marks correctly.

7d. Spelling

Writer spells common words correctly.

___ Spells most words correctly on final draft.

7e. Format / Legibility

Writer produces a neat and legible final copy, whether handwritten or typed.

If handwritten:
5 points if:
___Arranges the paper neatly on the page.
___ Writes legibly.

3 points if:
___ Produces a paper that shows an attempt at neatness.
___ Uses handwriting that does not interfere with readability

1 point if:
___ Produces a paper that is sloppy and difficult to read.
___ Writes illegibly.
___Omits words or word parts.

If typed:
5 points if:
___ Creates an effective and attractive layout.
___ Uses typographical devices to enhance text.

3 points if:
___ Creates an acceptable layout.
___ Generally uses typographical devices correctly.

1 point if:
___Uses confusing or inappropriate layout.
___Uses typographical devices ineffectively.
___ Omits words or word parts.
